Effective counselling requires on-going commitment from both parties. The clients learns how to find answers to their problems by sharing their anxieties with the counsellor who is non-judgemental and can listen without being involved in the situation. The counsellor provides direction and can give advice as to a decision or course of action.
Useful before life comes to a ‘crisis’ point a trained counsellor will help you focus on a new direction, a different way of dealing with life’s challenging issues.
Working with individuals or couples, the counsellor provides a neutral environment in which to look at the difficulties being experienced in or at the end of a relationship. Understanding the issues faced, without apportioning blame can lead to informed decisions being made about the future.
Relate – trained, Fay Hanniker is a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy
